The effect of one's presence on another person; to be is to manipulate. Accountability implies using manipulation honestly as a skill to improve communication, rather than unconsciously or with a dishonest agenda. Although manipulation is generally considered a negative trait or activity, in self defense training it is understood as an inherent trait of human presence.

Referring to social training to perceive women according to two basic stereotypes. The Madonna represents the good girl--a moral, on-a-pedestal, motherly type of women who deserves respect. The Whore represents the bad girl--sexually available and irresponsible, immoral, deserving of abuse.

A person who acts out a dysfunctional pattern of behavior in which one sacrifices personal Choices, Needs, etc., to the needs of others. The martyr personality gives her or himself a lot of credit for their self-sacrifice, but usually has a hidden-agenda where they consider others as overly-dependent and expect future returns for their sacrifice.

A personal safety strategy. A defender matches by responding appropriately in an interaction according to the level of energy expressed by the instigator. Matching Theory also includes the tactics of Underwhelm and Overwhelm. Matching as a strategy can be verbal, non-verbal, or physical.

1. General communication sent or received, a total sum of all verbal and non-verbal components of Expression.
2. Information sent individually by one component of Expression.
